REGIONALLY PRODUCED RENEWABLE FUELS GAIN REGULATORY SUPPORT
BETHEL, Me. (July 8, 2011) – In June the Maine State Legislature and the Maine Department of Public Safety adopted new chimney rules to allow the State to take further steps into the age of alternative energy. Now home and business owners can take advantage of emerging heating technology by allowing two different heating devices to vent through the same chimney.
The newly adopted rules pertain to the construction, maintenance and inspection of chimneys, fireplaces, vents and solid fuel burning appliances. Until now State regulations were potential stumbling blocks for people looking to update existing structures with alternative low emission, low carbon wood pellet boilers and other solid fuel heating equipment. “With the constant increase in home heating oil costs, many residential and commercial structures are in need of updated heating technology.” said Matt Bray of Maine Energy Systems. “We find that many people are interested in switching to centralized pellet heating systems but want or need to keep their existing heating systems in place. Adding a second chimney is usually cost prohibitive or impossible.” Matt continued, “This change will give more people access to our regionally produced fuel: wood pellets.”
The adoption of these new chimney and heating equipment rules, give home owners and private businesses greater flexibility to take advantage of wood pellet centralized heating technology by keeping their legacy heating equipment in place when needed. This change is another sign that that the State of Maine’s rules and regulations are moving towards embracing alternative energy solutions.
