Northeast American wood pellet industry

As the European demand for wood pellets has exceeded its capacity to produce them, wood products manufacturers in Maine, New Hampshire, in neighboring Canada, and across the continent have begun making wood pellets for the European market. That the wood pellet supply has preceded the introduction of wood pellet burning central heating systems is fortunate for us all. We are assured a lasting, robust fuel production industry and favorable prices as these large capacity mills compete to sell their wood pellets. Within the next few years it is likely that over a million tons of premium wood pellets will be produced in the northeastern U.S. and neighboring Canada.

Maine Energy Systems has long-term contracts with regional producers of premium grade wood pellets at prices that will prove favorable to our wood pellet buyers. Those wood pellets are currently being distributed in bulk to homes and businesses in parts of Maine and New Hampshire.

Wood pellets are delivered pneumatically into storage bins in residential basements via fill tubes configured for delivery. Depending upon the size of the storage bins in homes deliveries can provide fuel for extended periods. An ordinary home basement can generally accommodate a bin that will hold 4 or 5 tons of wood pellets.  4.5 tons of storage would have the heat equivalent of  two 275 gallon tanks of #2 heating oil.
